Outreach Endowment Grant # 2
Grace Community Foundation

In 2011, Grace food pantry served 3,568 families which included 4710 children; 6002 adults; and 491 elderly. We’ve reached out to over 730 new families in 2011, which is a 5% increase from 2010. The total number of people served by the food bank in 2011 was 11,203 which is a slight decrease from 2010, mainly because we refer clients to their neighborhood food pantry when we give them an emergency supply of food.

During the year, we distributed over 68 tons of food from various vendors and food drives including Second Harvest, B&M Provisions, Trio Provisions, Boy Scouts, and Post office. These purchases have been made possible by grants from the Trexler Trust, Hoch Foundation, Century Fund, Bill Sugra Fund, The Church of the Mediator, the Alan Feinstein Foundation, FEMA, the State, USDA, and many private donations.

After a brief hiatus, we continue to offer free legal assistance to our clients through the North Penn Legal Services office in Bethlehem. Thank you to Lori Molloy & NPLS for continuing this much needed service to the clients we serve. In 2011, we allowed United Healthcare to assist our clients with additional medical benefits they did not know existed; one of the benefits includes $300.00 of over-the-counter products for free, to qualified Medicare parts A & B participants. We also offered free flu shots for the first time, courtesy of Dave Moyer and the Allentown Health Bureau.

Even though we are considered an emergency food pantry, most of our clients supplement their food stamp stipend, fixed income or other financial setback with the food they receive from us every month.

As the oldest food pantry in Allentown, we pride ourselves in making our clients feel welcome by offering hospitality. Special thanks to Weis Market and Giant food stores for providing bread and baked goods which would otherwise be thrown away.

We appreciate your financial and nutritional support and look forward to the Thanksgiving in July food drive that you graciously coordinate to provide additional sustenance to the needy families in Allentown.
